Frequent guest Terry T. stayed with us in December 2020. Since we know that many of you are wondering what it’s like at Hale Pau Hana right now, we did a little interview with him. Read on to learn about his experience in Maui and for some great recommendations on activities during your next stay!
I arrived a bit later in the day in order to pick up some groceries and other necessities near the airport and other places, so we anticipated just having to open the combination lockbox used for late arrivals. It was nice to be warmly greeted in person. After going through the protocols in place due to the pandemic, I was given another “Aloha!” and though “the presence of breath” wasn’t the same as in previous years, the spirit of Aloha certainly was.
I suppose the best thing to say about the unit is very little. Trash and towel service was no problem and I felt safe and taken care of throughout the stay.
One of the reasons I love The HPH is the proximity of the beach and the grounds. They are handy, well managed and kept tidy. I am a professional magician and public speaker and used the time to finish writing a script for an upcoming show in Los Angeles, so I used the lanai everyday to put pen to paper. The view was my muse and the crashing waves sang to me. Inspiration all around. I captured every sunset with a photo and silent appreciation.

Walks were taken every day up and down from HPH and yes, I grilled two dinners with an adult beverage in hand and while there, talked to a few folks. Not a lot of mingling this trip for reasons beyond COVID safety. It was just nice to be reflective and grateful to be there.
This is the third or fourth time on Maui and frankly, I scaled down the excursions! I used Concierge Connection to book a guided morning kayak excursion (Maui Kayaks) as well as another visit to Piiholo Ranch Zipline. Both were fun, exhilarating and worth a repeat visit. John, with Maui Kayaks is an OUTSTANDING and patient guide. Saw whales breaching, eels, honu and loads of fish. Nate and the crew at Piiholo Ranch are also wonderful. They make the best zipline course on Maui even better.
“No trip is complete without going to The Cinnamon Roll Place for first morning breakfast!
I think it should be a rule or something!”
Those activities took up about half the day, which resulted in relaxing the rest of the day at HPH or a nearby beach. I’ve learned that keeping the schedule a bit loose, you can discover new things or return to favorite places for a longer visit. It should be noted that due to the pandemic, the vendors and restaurateurs were very happy to see us. Half of the meals enjoyed were at local places, the other half prepared and enjoyed in the unit. It was the right balance. Oh yeah, no trip is complete without going to The Cinnamon Roll Place for first morning breakfast! I think it should be a rule or something!
A new restaurant was visited this trip, Wailea Kitchen. Chef Chris and the staff are to be commended for bringing very local ingredients to the menu every day. There are options for omnivores, vegetarians and vegans alike. Worth seeking out and supporting. Made to feel like ‘ohana. The personal attention and unique menu make this a repeat visit for sure.
Short answer — Yes. Heck yes. Just pay attention, be mindful of yourself and others. Show respect for other travelers and those assisting in the travel. Be patient and understanding. It’ll all work out.
Mahalo for working so hard to keep everyone safe and still enjoying their time at HPH. In addition to providing great vacation services, I think you are providing excellent mental health services as well! This trip helped to keep me sane in 2020! Much aloha to you and I’ll see you in 2021.
